The date printed on a sealed vial is the manufacturer expiration date. It applies to the unopened product stored as labeled, and it stops being the governing date the moment the vial is reconstituted or first punctured.
From that point the beyond-use date takes over. It is a shorter, contamination-driven limit: once a container has been entered, the question is no longer how long the powder lasts on a shelf but how long the liquid inside can be re-entered safely.
This is why a vial with two years left on its printed expiration can still need discarding four weeks after you mix it.
3. Why the Diluent Decides the Answer
Bacteriostatic water contains a preservative, usually benzyl alcohol, which suppresses bacterial growth between entries. That preservative is the entire reason a container can be punctured more than once.
Sterile water and saline contain no preservative. USP guidance treats non-preserved preparations as single-dose, meaning the remaining liquid is not intended for a later entry no matter how much is left in the vial. Choosing the non-preserved option in the calculator reflects that: it returns single use rather than a number of days.
Where a manufacturer or compounding pharmacy states its own in-use period, that figure replaces the default. Use the label option and enter their number.

- A beyond-use date addresses contamination risk after entry. It does not establish that a peptide remains chemically intact or potent for that period.
- Chemical stability varies by peptide, temperature, light exposure, and handling, and some peptides degrade well before the microbial limit is reached.
- The 28-day figure is the USP General Chapter 797 default for preserved multi-dose containers when the label is silent. It is not a peptide-specific stability claim.
- The calculation assumes continuous storage as the label directs. It cannot correct for a temperature excursion.
- Manufacturer, pharmacy, and prescriber instructions always take precedence over any default shown here.
